Last weeks Program by: Tom DeVilbiss Michelle Hoppman, a Registered Dietician & Licensed Diabetes Educator at Trinity Health informed us that November is Diabetes Awareness Month. There are three types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Gestational diabetes. Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have "pre-diabetes" -- blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Recent research has shown that some long-term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during pre-diabetes. According the Michelle, education is the key to diabetes management. Each of us were encouraged to "know your own numbers". One of the more important numbers involved is the self administered "sugar test' where an individual draws a sample drop of blood and let's a meter read it. Haley Kramer provided an impromptu demonstration for the group on making such a reading. OK, 'nugh said! Thanks Hally and Michelle!

The Rotary Foundation Update The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today that it will award Rotary International a US$100 million challenge grant specifically for polio eradication. Rotary has pledged to match the Gates grant dollar-for-dollar over the next three years to provide a much-needed $200 million for the global fight against polio. Rotarians are strongly encouraged to share this newsworthy story with their local media. Rotary has prepared a press release that Rotarians can localize by adding content describing their club or district polio eradication activities, submitting photos of local participation in National Immunization Days, or adding comments from local Rotary leaders pledging continued support for this vital effort. The official press release can be downloaded here.
